Musicians Who Went Solo and Were More Successful than Their Former Groups

Musicians Who Went Solo and Were More Successful than Their Former Groups - March, 2013

It's rare for a solo act to actually make a name for themself independently from the group, but these guys did it...

1. Justin Timberlake, formerly of 'NSYNC: This guy knows how to sell pop.  Haha, get it?

2. BeyoncĂ©, formerly of Destiny's Child: Conspiracy theorists could argue that Destiny's Child was only formed to launch BeyoncĂ©'s solo career.

3. Eric Clapton, formerly of Cream: He was always destined to be a one-man show.

4. Morrisey, formerly of The Smiths: The vocals and angst of The Smiths, but with better lyrics and more evolved melodies.

5. Don Henley, formerly of The Eagles: Let's face it, "The Boys of Summer" is way underrated and better than "Hotel California."

**Honorable Mentions**

Some who went solo were only equally as successful as their groups.

6. Ozzy Osbourne, formerly of Black Sabbath: It's "Crazy Train" and "Mama I'm Coming Home" versus "Iron Man" and "Paranoid."

7. Joan Jett, formerly of The Runaways: Anyone who pays attention to this stupid blog knows that I talk about The Runaways a lot.  I still think they are better than Joan Jett's solo stuff, but the numbers say that her legacy easily beats the group's.  Who even knew about The Runaways until the K-Stew movie came out three years ago?

8. Sting, formerly of The Police: This is another one where yes, Sting is arguably more famous than The Police, but his solo music pretty much sucks balls.  Maybe all that kama sutra has warped his mind.

Best "Oops!" Moments from Horror Movies [with links]

Best "Oops!" Moments from Horror Movies - July, 2012

Whatever that means...

1. Psycho (1960): When Norman Bates is sinking Marion Crane's car into the lagoon, it snags for a few seconds halfway down. Norman's panicked expression (at 1:08 of this clip) is priceless.

2. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974): At 4:30 of this clip, Leatherface's family tries to give Grandpa the honor of making a kill for old time's sake, but he's so old that he can't even hold up the hammer.

3. Carrie (1976): At 6:00 of this clip, Sue, the only survivor of Carrie's prom night massacre, appears sympathetic to Carrie's mental snap only to get a surprise of her own. Eh, but it was only a dream. Go ahead and watch the whole clip for Piper Laurie's orgasmic (if not biblical) death.

4. Friday the 13th (1980): Another surprise ending when all seems so peaceful. And the only real close-up of Jason you'll ever get.

5. Night of the Living Dead (1968): What a shame. After a night of zombie apocalyptic horror, help is finally on the way for the heroic Ben. Except that the help mistakes him for a zombie and shoots him in the head. Damn the white man. Start this clip at 3:00.

6. Pet Sematary (1989): Desperation at its finest. After all that has happened, Louis still hasn't learned his lesson and decides to bring his wife back from the dead. Sure, they kiss a little, exchange some guts, but she kills him anyway. Dumbass.

7. The Ring (2002): Naomi Watts just can't get it right. Just when she thinks she's clear by freeing the creepy little ring girl, her precocious son (who somehow knows all the answers) informs her that that was a stupid move (at 2:20 of this clip).

Things I Have Learned from Dating Lesbians

Things I Have Learned from Dating Lesbians - July, 2012

1. Lesbians are all friends with their exes.

2. There is only one excuse for not wanting to have sex and that is "I'm too tired tonight."  Any other reason is the WRONG ANSWER.

3. Dildos are expensive.

4. Bitches be crazy.

5. After sleeping with someone for the first time, the best indication that she's into you is if she wants to do brunch the next morning.  Conversely, comments like, "I'm not sure what's going on between me and my ex" or "I don't believe in monogamy" are red flags.

6. Lesbians love to do brunch.

7. Lesbians love to cuddle.

8. Some exes just never go away.

9. Lesbians are all connected somehow.

10. ...Bitches be crazy.

Reasons I Will Not Be Attending NYC Pride This Year

Reasons I Will Not Be Attending NYC Pride This Year - May, 2012

1. I don't feel like wrangling and pretending to be buddies with the queers I really only see once a year at Pride.

2. I have only ever experienced one great Pride and that was not in NYC.

3. There is a 99.6% chance that I'll run into someone I don't want to see and a 85.2% chance that I'll run into more than one person I don't want to see.

4. I don't handle day drinking very well anymore.

5. It's hot, it's crowded, and modestly clean bathrooms are non-existent.

6. I usually end up having to pee behind a car because modestly clean bathrooms are non-existent.

7. I don't want to be dragged into wingman'ing the sale of unattractive Thai pants again this year.

8. It's really only fun if you have someone to make out with in front of the Jesus freaks.

9. Something unexpected and unfortunate always happens to someone in my party:
EXHIBIT A (2009): Kidney stones and subsequent bureaucratic battle with St. Vincent's.
EXHIBIT B (2010): Mild heat stroke on the Hudson River.
EXHIBIT C (2011): Five-story drop (and disappearance) of the perfect blunt.

Unofficial Rules for the Subway That Should Be Official

Unofficial Rules for the Subway That Should Be Official – January, 2012

Like many New Yorkers, the subway experience is a constant source of frustration in my life.  Here are some ideas that would make things easier.  In my ideal world...

1. No leaning on poles, especially when there are people trying to hold on to said pole, asshole.

2. When boarding a car, let the people out before going in.  Duh.

3. If you’re standing next to the doors of a crowded car, step out of the car to let people out.

4. Move all the way in to the train and fill the empty space in the middle.

5. The standing spots next to the doors are first come, first served.  Passengers trying to squeeze in cannot take the side spots next to the doors if they are already taken.  Also, if you are sitting next to one of these spots, your arm must remain within the side bars.

6. Take off your backpack on a crowded train.  It's only fair that you will otherwise be pick-pocketed.

7. When sitting, your legs must not spread wider than your shoulder width.  Also, don’t be a douchebag and take up more than one seat.

8. Don’t hold the doors open.  It slows everything down.

9. No littering on the tracks or on the train.  Most platforms have trashcans every 30 feet or so.  Just put it in the damn trashcan.

10. Wait until the train has stopped to stand up and move toward the door, especially when there are people trying to hold on to the pole above you.  This means you, bitchy old white lady, who insists on making me let go so you can save 2 seconds of getting off.

11. During rush hour, if you are the first person to reach the stairs, you must haul ass up the steps.  Conversely, if you are slow, injured, or carrying a stroller, you must wait to the side until the faster people have passed.

12. When you get to the top or bottom of the stairs, move out of the fucking way.

Conversations with My Grandma

Conversations with My Grandma – September, 2008

R: "Mom, did you have some Chinese food?"
Grandma:  "I don't know those people!"
R: "No, CR got some CHINESE FOOD"
Grandma: "I ate at 5:00 because he didn't tell me he was getting Chinese food."
R: "Well, it was 6:00 when I told him to get Chinese food - you already ate."
Grandma: "He should have told me he was going to get Chinese food."
CR: "R, please stop.  Do not talk to her unless you absolutely have to."

Doctor: "So, how long has your knee been bothering you?"
Grandma: "I'm 83 years old."

(Grandma has to get knee surgery)
Doctor: "She will have to have someone with her when she gets home from the hospital... she will be on pain medication and be loopy (out of it)."
R:   "OH MY GOD."
CR: "What the hell! She is loopy enough as it is."

R: "I'm tired, I am going to put my pajamas on."
Grandma: “Oh you are going out tonight?"
R: "Oh yes, I always go out in my PJ’s."

K: “Grandma, do you want to see a picture of me and M at prom?”
Grandma: “No, CA already made me brownies.”

CR: “You can start dinner, R won’t be home for awhile.”
Grandma: “I know, my back hurts too.”

Grandma: “Stand up for your rights!” (as CR and Grandma pull out of the driveway)

R: “I’m the boss!”
Grandma: “You’re not the boss, I’m older!”

(CA calls to talk to CR)
CA: “Grandma, it’s CA…”
Grandma: “What?!”
CA: “It’s me, CA.”
Grandma: “Who are you trying to reach?!”
CA: “Grandma, it’s CA!”
Grandma: “There’s no one here by that name, bye bye!”

Grandma: "I was just watching War of the Worlds."
R: "Why don't you ever watch some newer movies?"
Grandma: "How am I supposed to do that?"
R: "By changing the channel."

R: "You are taking your cell phone with you when you go on a walk, aren't you?"
Grandma:  "No, no one calls me on it."
R:  "That is not the reason you should take it.  It is not just to receive calls."
Grandma:  "I know, it's in case I have to call me."
R: "No, you don't call yourself.  It is in case something happens; for example, if you fall or get lost. You need to have the phone to call us or 911."
Grandma: "Okay, I will take it with me."

Grandma: “I need to go to the fire station to get my blood pressure checked because my eyes hurt.”

Grandma: “There’s a bone growing in my mouth.  I need to go to the doctor to get it removed.”

R: “T is going to get the mail and the paper.  Do not get the mail or the paper. T will do it. I do not want to worry about you falling or the dog getting out.”
Grandma: “Okay.”
R (to be sure she heard and understood): “So, are you going to get the mail and the paper?”
Grandma: “Yes, I can get the mail and the paper.”

R: “Why didn't you eat the left over pasta with meat sauce?”
Grandma: “Well I ate some of the plain pasta.”
R: “Why didn't you eat the other pasta? Do you have something against leftovers?”
Grandma; “No, I eat leftovers. I just wanted to use my packet of sloppy joe seasoning so it would not be wasted.”
R: “Well, now we have to throw out expensive meat because you wanted to use a $2.00 packet of seasoning which would not spoil for a year…”

Grandma (complaining about her knee): “I should not have done the surgery.”
R: “Well, then you'd be in a wheelchair in a couple years and not be able to walk.”
Grandma: “I would not be in a wheelchair, I would have got a scooter.”
R: “Really, well how would you get to the doctor? I would not buy a van to take you and your scooter around. You could not take the scooter on the freeway. You could not take a shower in the scooter, etc.”
Grandma: BLANK LOOK

Grandma: “What are you watching?”
R: “The Academy Awards are on.”
Grandma: “Oh, channel 7, I will watch it in my room.”
R: “You do not even know these movies or any of the people up for awards.”
Grandma: “Oh, they don't give awards to old movies that I know?”
R: “No, only movies that came out in the last year... not 30 years ago.”

Grandma: "I just don't understand it, I take those pills and my blood pressure is still high. I have to go to the doctor."
R: "What was it?"
Grandma "What?"
R: "Your BLOOD PRESSURE, what was the reading?"
Grandma: "155."
R: "155 over what?"
Grandma: "Just 155."
R: "There are 2 numbers to blood pressure. What was the other number?"
Grandma: "It is just 155."
R: "Well, 155 must be the first number, because if it was the 2nd number, it would have killed you already… and that is not high, it is lower than CR."
Grandma: "It sounds high to me."
